The official inauguration of the biggest single area for sports, concerts and large scale activities ever to be put up in Davao City, the Gymnasium and Cultural Center of the University of Southeastern Philippines is set on Friday, August 17 at 1:00 p.m. The USeP gym is inside the University’s Obrero campus, Davao City.
Through the congressional initiative of former Speaker of the House of Representatives Prospero C. Nograles and the efforts of the University President, Dr. Perfecto A. Alibin, the construction of the gymnasium that has 8,000 seating capacity commenced in January 2010 with the initial budget of P60 million, approved in May 2009 per General Appropriations Act (GAA) in 2009. In October 2009, thirty million pesos, through Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), was added to the budget. In 2010, another thirty million pesos was released, and in 2011, a total of twenty-five million financed the various phases of the construction. Overall, from May 2009 to date, a total of one hundred forty-five million pesos was spent for the gym construction.
Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Party-List Representative Mark Aeron H. Sambar will lead the official inauguration today. Other members of the platform party are Speaker Nograles; Atty. Karlo Alexei Nograles, representative, first congressional district, Davao City who also sits as a member of the USeP Board representing Congressman Juan Edgardo M. Angara, chair, committee of education, culture and the arts; other members of the Board of Regents; and officials of the University led by President Alibin. The USeP faculty, staff and students; some officials of Barangay 18-B; regional directors of government agencies in Davao City; and some presidents of universities and colleges will be present to witness the event. City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio; Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte; Congressman Isidro Ungab of the City’s third district; Congresswoman Mylene Garcia-Albano of the City’s second district; and the mayors of nearby cities in the region were also invited.
The commemorative plate that is placed in the entrance of the gym read “This Priority Project was made possible through the combined efforts of His Excellency President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III, Speaker Prospero C. Nograles, Senator Francis “Chiz” G. Escudero, Congressman Karlo Alexei B. Nograles and PBA Partylist Congressman Mark Aeron H. Sambar.” It is signed by the officials of the University.
The USeP Gymnasium and Cultural Center, that lies on a 3,500-square meter lot area, is a result of a vision, unified goals, determination, collective efforts, and constant pursuit for excellence and continuous growth of the University’s leaders and partners in development undertakings. With the USeP gym in Obrero, sport events, concerts, conventions, and other large scale activities can now be enjoyed by the Davaoeños right in the heart of Davao City. (USeP PIO)
