The University of Southeastern Philippines earns the accolade once more as two of its faculty member representatives won first place as Best Paper during the recently concluded First National Conference on Poverty and Sustainable Development (2017POVCON) held last September 13-15, 2017. Dr. Fernando V. Magdato Jr. and Engr. Ryan Abenoja presented the paper on”Establishment of Solar-Powered Irrigation with Aquaculture System in Rainfed Rice Field: Key to Food Security and Poverty Alleviation”and bested 35 other research, development and extension papers from other universities and colleges in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The call for papers for this 2017POVCON revolved around the major theme: “Addressing Poverty Challenges Through Multidisciplinary Approaches and Collaborations” with sub-themes on Poverty & Economic Development, Poverty &Agri-Fishery Poverty & Eco-Tourism, Poverty Eradication Success Stories Poverty & Geography, Environment & Resources Poverty & Armed Conflict.
Other paper abstracts submitted by USeP faculty which were considered for presentation were “Addressing Former Drug Dependents’ Issues on Poverty and Vulnerability through Participatory Action Research” by Dr. Mervin G. Gascon, “Rebuilding Life and Livelihood after Typhoon Pablo in New Bataan, Compostela Valley” by Dr. Cecirly G. Puig and Dr. Danilo B. Pacoy. Other paper abstracts also considered were“Destitution and Rural Farmland Drowning Among Children in Dujali, Davao del Norte” by Dr. Mervin G. Gascon, “Measuring the Wealth Index Across Mindanao Provinces Using Principal Components Analysis (PCA)” by Janila Allana Valdez and Roperto S. Deluna Jr, and “Impact of Microfinance on Agricultural Productivity of Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) in Davao del Norte” by Christine R. Varquez and Roperto S. Deluna Jr. However, they were not able to attend due to conflict of schedule.
The three-day event was held at M Grand Royale Resort, Executive Heights, and AVC Hall, Samar State University, Catbalogan City, Samar. This was organized by Samar State University, Provincial Government of Samar, City Government of Catbalogan, Northwest Samar State University, Eastern Samar State University, and University of Eastern Philippines.
