Abstract : This study was conducted to determine the influence of metacognitive and motivational aspects of problem solving to the students’ success of problem solving transferand furthermore, to determine what aspect of problem solving skills predicts success in problem solving transfer. The descriptive correlation method was used to determine the relationship of the metacognitive and the motivational aspects of problem solving skills and the students’ success in problem solving transfer. The respondents of the study are the fourth year high school students of Davao Central College from where the researcher is connected. There were 122 respondents of the study which is 37 more than the required number of respondents based on the Slovin’s formula. Findings show that the problem solving skills of the respondents in terms of metacognitive and motivational aspects are high, students’ success in problem solving transfer was high, only the metacognitive knowledge predicts success in problem solving transfer and there was no significant correlation between the metacognitive and motivational aspects of problem solving skills and the success in problem solving transfer. Based on the result it is recommended that administrators and teachers must incorporate activities in the class and conduct trainings and workshops in enhancing metacognitive knowledge.

Title : Learning difficulties of students in intermediate algebra : Basis for intervention
Author : Joy Baltar – Caoile
Name of Institution : University of Southeastern Philippines
Degree
: Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics
Year
: April 2012
Abstract : This study was conducted to determine the level of the learning difficulties of students in Intermediate Algebra and how they affect the performance of the students. The descriptive quantitative correlational method was used to determine the relationship between the performance and the level of learning difficulties of students. The random sampling design was used to determine the participants of this study which involved 48 students of Jesus J. Soriano National High School. It was found out that the level of students’ performance in Intermediate Algebra is in the basic level. The students’ learning difficulties are significantly correlated with their level of performance except in the area of Understanding Math Concepts. It was found out further that the learning difficulties of students could predict their performance in Intermediate Algebra except in understanding math concepts through the three models: a) Y = 74.053 + 1.026X1; b) Y = 71.960 + .796X1 + .895X2; and c) Y = 71.468 + .642X1 + .869X2 + .697X3. It was recommended that a workbook should be developed and utilized as an intervention material to remedy the learning difficulties of students and and to improve their skills in Intermediate Algebra.

Findings showed that the instructional practices of the gifted and talented program in the elementary school in terms of instructional environment; planning effective instruction; effective implementation of specially designed instruction; and effective on-going assessment of student progress had overall combined mean rating of 4.3892 with descriptive equivalent of high. The level of satisfaction of students on instructional practices of the gifted and talented program in the elementary school is high with mean of 4.2785 and the level of the performance of students is very good with mean of 88.5075. Among the indicators of instructional practices only instructional environment differ significantly when classified according to stakeholders. The null hypothesis was accepted. It is concluded that the level of instructional practices of the gifted and talented program in the elementary schools was high and the performance of students was very good. Instructional environment has significant difference when classified according to stakeholders. There were no significant relationships between instructional practices, satisfaction of parents and teachers, and satisfaction and grades of students. Most of the participants think that the teachers are demonstrating quality instructional practices in the school. It is recommended that Tugbok Elementary SPED Center Officials may design educational programs with appropriate implementation guide to take into account the wide diversity of special students characteristics and needs within a child-centered pedagogy for special learners with special learning needs.

Title : Structural model predicting english proficiency of high school students
Author : Bernadine Joyce S. Elizaga
Name of Institution : University of Southeastern Philippines, College of Education
Degree
: Master of Education
Major
: Language Teaching – English
Year
: 2012
Abstract : This study aimed in correlating student-related factors,home-related factors, school-related factors, with English proficiency. A descriptive correlational design is used to describe the statistical association between the variables using one English proficiency test and survey questionnaires that gather data on student attitude, study skills, personal and family background, as well as teacher evaluation. This multiple regression analysis identifies which factor can significantly influence English proficiency. Results have shown that attitude has a negative correlation with English proficiency while English grade has a positive one. A combination of high English grade, negative attitude, and high parent support yield better English proficiency among learners in this context. The relationship between negative attitude and English proficiency shows the strongest significance, therefore, further study and clarification is suggested since results do not coincide with earlier literature.

Abstract : This study was conducted to find out The Effects of Token Economy Rewards System to Improve Behavior of Children with Autism in F. Bangoy Central Elementary School (SPED Center). Single-case experimental design with time-series was used for 2 subjects diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study records the inappropriate behavior manifested in 30-minute timed classroom activities. The instruments used in this study were Teacher Interview Form and Behavior Checklist Form to determine predominant behaviors and to tally each observable behavior respectively. Both subjects undertook before and after exposure to the intervention in terms of personal interest and least interest reinforcers (PIR & LIR) to tally the frequency of inappropriate behaviors. The statistical treatment of data involved the computation of the weighted mean, standard deviation and t-test. From the findings of the study, both subjects‘ observed showed predominant inappropriate behaviors identified as: out of seat and inappropriate vocalization. Each inappropriate behavior of the subjects‘ resulted to: (1) there is a significant difference between before and after exposure of the treatment looking at their mean scores. (2) Personal Interest Reinforcer type of token rewards system was a significant variable to improve behavior of the subjects than Least Interest Reinforcer. This study recommends that the token economy rewards system may be implemented in classroom activities for children with autism.

Title : Model of critical thinking skills in Biology Education: An analysis of metacognition using item response theory
Author : Elaine C. Tubat
Name of Institution : University of Southeastern Philippines
Year
: October 2011
Abstract : This study was conducted to establish the metacognitive process being used by students in critical thinking skills of the Fourth Year Bachelor of Secondary Education in three (3) schools in Davao City. Descriptive survey approach was used and the data was analyzed using the  Item Response Theory Model.  Results showed that the metacognitive process involved in the critical thinking skills of the students  are the following:  using facts and theories skillfully, can analyze  the argument  and identify the main element. Students can also logically connect the problem to the solutions, can weigh evidence to personal preference, verifies the given concepts, can identify seemingly apparent relationships of elements,  rationalize the given situation and have word reasons using essential terms. Further, it shows that the metacognitive process starts with the using the examples  to exemplify  the concept, connecting facts and structures , identify  basic concepts, giving explanation for observed phenomena , observation, connecting logically  the problem  to the solutions/establishing analogy, offering explanation based from  the scenario given, weighing evidence according to personal preference , formulating  experiment, inferring conclusions from the result of the experiments, identifying  seemingly apparent relationship of elements, verifies the concept, using facts and theories, analyzing the main argument , establishing connection of  ideas, hypothesizing, reasoning using facts and predicting events using facts and theories /giving explanation using facts and theories. In addition, teacher should ensure upon teaching the proper application of facts and theories without impartiality. Teacher should develop the analytical thinking of students. Logical thinking must be given emphasis in solving problems. Allow students to argue  based from their personal belief. Students must also be taught how to verify concepts, establish the relationships  of the given facts and avoiding the use of jargons in scientific community.
