SAEc conducts technical training- workshop, first of its RATEE series for 2016

The School of Applied Economics (SAEc) has recently conducted technical training- workshop dubbed as “Training- Workshop on Basic Quantitative Techniques for Research” last July 21- 23 on the same year at Villa Margarita Hotel, J.P Laurel Avenue, Bajada, Davao City. There are 36 who participated all coming from the academe as well as from private institutions and national government agencies including local government units (LGUs).

In the training, the participants were introduced on the right research process, sampling methods, exploratory data analysis, and descriptive and inferential statistics. Also, they were provided with the knowledge in identifying appropriate methods for undertaking statistical analyses of various data types using software applications. The lecture- workshop setting with computer laboratory exercises has helped them to be trained in hands- on application.

The training- workshop is a project under the Research Assistance and Training in Economics and Econometrics (RATEE) Program initiated by the extension unit of SAEc. According to Jennifer Erazo- Hinlo, SAEc Extension Coordinator, “RATEE is a lifelong and continuing education program provided for researchers, planners and policy makers. This initiative is in line with the task of SAEc in teaching, conducting research and providing advisory and extension services to private and government institutions”.

After the three day stint, the participants were also asked to devise research proposal (per group) focusing on the area that interests them and have them present it. With the expertise of the resource persons headed by Dr. Purisima G. Bayacag, the individual proposals were given critiques to better them.

The RATEE series has two training programs: the basic and the advanced levels. After the basic training, advanced quantitative techniques commonly used in socio-economic researches will be introduced to the participants. The advanced level training aims to enhance their knowledge and competencies in the application of economic theories to relevant sectors and economic problems; and to develop their ability to determine suitable methodologies, statistical and econometric tools in undertaking research.

The advanced level will be held at the same venue on July 26- 28, 2016. For registration, interested participants may contact the secretariat through Jennifer E. Hinlo at +63933-686-5944 and Vaneza Jean Macan at 227-8192 local 226 or send an e- mail at saec@usep.edu.ph.
