Balan<\/p>\n<p>The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) proudly showcased excellence in the field of statistics as its fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Statistics students bagged multiple awards at the 2025 CBMS Convention and Data Festival for Regions XI and XII. The event, held on September 15\u201316, 2025, at the SMX Lanang Convention Center, Davao City, carried the theme \u201cREADY, STAT, GO! Building Agile, Resilient, and Future-Ready Filipino Communities through Data-Driven Systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zedrick Vapor Balan, is the champion of the pre-event contest StatShots: Telling Stories through Data and Lenses. His entry, which focused on SDG 4: Quality Education, highlighted how photojournalism can capture the role of statistics in everyday life and reflect the realities, challenges, and progress toward sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>In the on-the-spot contest Report It Right: The Data Reporting Contest, USeP dominated the podium. Jen Cabanog secured 1st Place, followed by Danielle C. Juarez in 2nd Place, and Sarahmie Dalumpines in 3rd Place. The competition tested the participants\u2019 ability to craft accurate, well-structured press releases using official statistics, reinforcing the importance of data-driven reporting in journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ken C. Macusang earned 2nd Place in VizWiz: Turning Data into Visual Representations, where participants transformed numbers into compelling visuals that make data more accessible to the public. Mark Jimrex Cifra also took part in both StatShots and VizWiz, exemplifying dedication and versatility. The team\u2019s success was guided by their coach, Asst. Prof. Aries P. Valeriano of the Mathematics and Statistics Department.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond competitions, USeP students also took part in knowledge-sharing sessions. Loren Jane Laher presented her thesis, \u201cPredictive Modelling of Fire Incidents in Davao City Using Deep Neural Networks and Random Forest,\u201d during a breakout session. Her presentation bridged academic research with real-world application, proving how statistical innovation can address urgent societal challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The convention gathered participants from SUCs and government units across Regions XI and XII, including the University of the Philippines\u2013Mindanao, Mindanao State University\u2013General Santos City, Davao del Sur State University, Davao del Norte State College, and Davao de Oro State College, among others. Plenary and breakout sessions fostered collaboration among students, professionals, and policymakers, emphasizing the role of the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) in guiding evidence-based governance and ensuring inclusive community development.<\/p>\n<p>The event\u2019s resounding success highlighted one clear message: statistics is not just about numbers\u2014it is about transforming data into decisions, empowering communities, and shaping a sustainable future for the nation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Article by\u00a0 Danielle C.
