USeP bags awards in 35th SMAARRDEC RSRDEH


In line with the celebration of the 35th Founding Anniversary of Southern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (SMAARRDEC), the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) participated in the Regional Symposium on Research, Development, and Extension Highlights (RSRDEH) at the University Gymnasium and Cultural Center (UGCC) on August 17, 2022.

Several research, development, and policy brief papers from the participating consortium-institutions as well as R&D posters were presented in the RSRDEH. A total of 24 papers; 12 of which were research studies, six (6) development papers, and eight (8) policy briefs were included in the symposium. Aside from showcasing R&D studies, the SMAARRDEC RSRDEH included an exhibit booth contest- where the partner and implementing agencies of SMAARRDEC showcased the products and services they produced and offered.

USeP snatched awards from several categories of RSRDEH, particularly in the Research, Development, and Policy Brief categories.

The joint-study titled, “Hydrogeological Survey on Proposed Groundwater Extraction Sites in Barangay Kahayag- San Roque, Bislig City: A Collaboration Between Bislig City Water District and USeP”, presented by Mr. Christian Paul F. Escarin, and co-authored by Ms. Mary Rose S. Roferos and Mr. Hezekiah C. Canosa, placed third in the Research Category.

In the Development Category, the University clinched first place with the paper titled, “Piloting Science for the Convergence of Agriculture and Tourism (SciCAT) to a Magsasaka-Siyentista Farm in Davao Region”, presented by Ms. Bryl I. Manigo and co-authored by Dr. Gilbert A. Importante, Dr. Gilbert M. Gordo, and Engr. Filmann T. Simpao.

Mr. Joeteddy B. Bugarin placed first in the Policy Brief Presentation with the paper, “Managing the Institutional Mechanism for the Future of Davao’s Pummelo Industry”.

Further, the Poster Category, Mr. Bryl I. Manigo, Mr. Winstor Atamosa, and Mr. Ervin Roy Matucading won first place with the poster title, “Special Purpose Rice Grown under Davao del Norte Condition”.

The University was also awarded a Plaque of Recognition as an active and ‘faithful’ member-institution to the endeavors and thrust of the consortium, and host agency of the SMAARRDEC since April 2003 during the Stakeholders’ Night at The Ritz Hotel on August 16, 2022.
