USeP produces first batch of accountancy graduates, confers degrees to Class of 2024

It was four years ago when the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) first planted a dream to confer an accountancy degree; now the University has produced its first Accountancy graduates!

USeP Obrero Campus celebrated a meaningful event on June 28, 2024, as it held its 45th Commencement Exercises for undergraduate programs that bore the theme, “Transforming Lives and Communities: The USeP’s Legacy of Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development over 45 Years” at the University Gymnasium and Cultural Center (UGCC) in Davao City.

The ceremony honored the fruits of excellence and perseverance of over 1000 graduating students from various undergraduate programs including three (3) graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy- one of whom is Ms. Lyle Joyce M. Saturninas, Summa Cum Laude and the valedictorian of Class of 2024. These graduates are poised to draw a significant impact in their respective fields, thus contributing to the University’s vision of transforming lives and communities.

In his message, University President Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr. warmly congratulated the graduates for thriving and surviving in their tenure at the University- stating that the quality of graduates is mirrored in the quality of education and instruction of a university where an individual is from. Dr. Gabales also shared excellent news about the University being recently conferred with the Philippine Quality Award Level 3- Recognition for Mastery in Quality Management by the Office of the President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Dr. Gabales also mentioned his aspiration that all graduates of the University develop a heart for inclusivity and sustainability. “Regardless of your motivations, we hope that your time here has been worthwhile and enriching. Throughout your time in the University, you have gained knowledge and develop a deep understanding of the importance of inclusivity and sustainability- advocacies that USeP has actively promoted for years,” he said.

He also commended the graduates, being a batch affected by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, for showing remarkable resilience and strength- demonstrated by adapting to new forms or ways of learning. He further encouraged graduates to create and drive positive changes and impacts wherever they are situated.

Senator Francis N. Tolentino, Majority Floor Leader of the Philippine Senate, graced the occasion as the commencement speaker. Senator Tolentino emphasized the importance of acknowledging the efforts and the hard work of the members of every graduate’s family- especially the parents- for honing the graduates of what they are right now. He also opened an idea for USeP to have a General Hospital, after knowing that the University is offering a Doctor of Medicine program- the first state-run medical program in the region.

He also gave a message about the significance of the bond the University has with its graduates. “As you step into the world, beyond the walls of the University of Southeastern Philippines, remember that your education is not merely about the knowledge that you have acquired but the wisdom that you gained. And I encourage the faculty members, the parents, our work does not end in a graduation ceremony. They should step out not alone, but again, together with the guidance of the parents and the continuing mentoring, although at a distance of the faculty members,” Senator Tolentino said.

Ms. Saturninas, in her valedictory speech, said that whatever happens in one’s life is not fate, but one’s choice. “I realize that we may have landed in this University by fate, but we have stayed, struggled, and persevered by choice. Graduating here in the University and finally grasping the hard-earned diploma is a remarkable feat in itself. And being distinguished as a graduate with a Latin Honor is only a bonus,” she said.

Ms. Saturninas also encouraged the graduates to thank their parents or whoever has guided them in their journey towards success in their tertiary education.

Hon. Kenneth A. Araya, University Student Government President and a member of the USeP Board of Regents, led the Pledge of Loyalty to the Alma Mater.

Moreover, Hon. Antonio M. Faunillan, Jr., President of the University Alumni Federation and a member of the USeP Board of Regents, inducted the graduates to the University Alumni Association. Hon. Faunillan also invited the graduates to actively participate and take part in the endeavors of the Association and reported to the members of the community the progress of the Alumni Association.

The singing of the University Hymn wrapped up the commencement exercises.

As the graduates embark on their respective professional journey, they carry with them the values and principles instilled in their academic stay at USeP. Their dedication, commitment, and unwavering spirit will serve as beacons of inspiration as they navigate the path towards sustainable development and transformation.

Soar high, Agilas!
