USeP holds workshop on harmonizing General Education, NSTP, and PE courses

The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) conducted a two-day workshop aimed at harmonizing the course offerings for General Education (GE), National Service Training Program (NSTP), and Physical Education (PE). The workshop, organized by the Curriculum and Instruction Office (CIO) in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA), is part of the University’s commitment to continuous quality improvement in its program offerings.

The workshop brought together faculty members from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Development Management (CDM), College of Teacher Education and Technology (CTET), and the Malabog Extension Campus. Faculty from the Gen Ed, NSTP, and PE departments and concerned Deans participated in the event.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Marnie Grace I. Sonico, Dean of CAS, welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of this workshop in enhancing academic quality. Following her address, Dr. Genna J. Carmelo, Director of CIO, provided an overview of the workshop. She outlined the expected outputs and outcomes.

Subsequently, Dr. Cesar A. Adegue, Education Supervisor II from CHED Region XI highlighted the legal foundations for the aforementioned courses. He also underlined the crucial role of GE in preparing students for their specialized studies.

Building on these discussions, University President Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr. delivered a keynote message. He encouraged the faculty to design GE courses in a way that makes them more engaging for students, stressing that these courses should be viewed as essential components of their education.

Adding to this, Dr. Jeneifer C. Nueva, Vice President for Academic Affairs, elaborated on the importance of integrating Outcomes-Based Education (OBE). She also emphasized the need to include topics on internationalization and the CDIO framework in course design, further aligning with global educational trends.

As the workshop progressed, Assoc. Prof. Luden L. Baterina, GE Coordinator of CAS, presented the course map for GE, NSTP, and PE. This was followed by breakout sessions where participants collaborated on harmonizing the syllabi, ensuring consistency and cohesion across all departments involved.

On the second day, the participants presented the harmonized syllabi, actively sharing insights and receiving constructive feedback from their peers. Furthermore, Assoc. Prof. Jocelyn B. Dofitas, MiSpace Deputy Director, contributed to the discussion by outlining the process of instructional materials development. Following her presentation, participants engaged in parallel sessions, during which they created outlines for course packs based on the newly harmonized syllabi.

The workshop concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Rosendo R. Meriwan, GE Coordinator of CTET. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving a unified curriculum across the University, summarizing the event’s purpose with the phrase, ” Basta Gen Ed, GANDA ANG HATID,” emphasizing the value of cooperation and shared effort.

Moving forward, participants are expected to complete the harmonized syllabi and course pack outlines, which will be implemented across all colleges in the University. This unified approach is intended to ensure consistency and enhance the quality of the delivery of GE, NSTP, and PE courses throughout the University.
