USeP advances sustainability in education through Applied CDIO conference


The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) hosted a two-day conference, Applied CDIO: Sustainability in Education via CDIO-Integrated Curriculum, on December 4-5, 2024. The event brought together educators, administrators, and guests to explore the integration of the Conceive-Design- Implement-Operate (CDIO) Framework into curricula, advancing sustainability in education.

The conference featured key educational leaders and CDIO experts, including USeP President Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr., USeP Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jeneifer C. Nueva, CDIO Asia Region Director Mr. Sin-Moh Cheah, and Singapore Polytechnic’s Deputy Course Management Director, Mr. Kim Fai Soh.

Also present were the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines’ Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (USTP CiTL) CDIO champions, Engr. Aileen A. Sierras, Dr. Lloyd John B. Estampa, and Engr. John Rey B. Bajuyo, who gave comprehensive lectures and strategies for integrating CDIO principles into existing programs and emphasized active and experiential learning approaches. The program, led by the USeP CDIO Head Dr. Joie D. Cataytay, in coordination with the USeP Curriculum and Instruction Director Dr. Genna J. Carmelo, featured comprehensive sessions on CDIO principles, sustainable development, and curriculum integration.

Attendees included College deans and faculty members from USeP, and representatives from Davao del Norte State College and Davao del Sur State College.

Dr. Gabales highlighted the University’s commitment to modernizing teaching methodologies, underscoring CDIO’s role in enhancing academic programs and aligning them with international standards. He also encouraged the faculty members to embrace CDIO as part of the University’s commitment to continuous quality improvement. Additionally, he highlighted USeP’s vision for internationalization, stressing that it involves more than just sending students abroad but also preparing all USeP graduates global employability.

Mr. Sin-Moh Cheah affirmed his commitment to providing ongoing support and collaboration with USeP as the institution advances its efforts toward CDIO integration. Meanwhile, Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr. expressed his gratitude to the CDIO Asia Region Director for his guidance and reiterated the University’s readiness to support faculty-led initiatives aimed at embedding the CDIO Framework into academic programs.

The conference marked a significant step for USeP and its partner institutions in advancing educational innovation and sustainability through CDIO, reinforcing their commitment to producing globally competent graduates.
