
In preparation for the upcoming TINGUG International Conference scheduled for October this year, the Institute of Languages and Creative Arts (ILCA) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), in partnership with HANDURAWAN, invited three (3) award-winning Mindanawon musicians to speak on the second day of the TINGUG: Performing Arts Workshop 2024 at the CIC-AVR. This two-day workshop holds significant importance as part of the University’s research program, emphasizing the role of IKSPs in fostering the creation of creative works that reflect Indigenous cultural heritage and oral traditions.
On the second day, Asst. Prof. Ariel C. Pedrano, Research Center Manager of CAS, extended a warm welcome to all participants and speakers. A Mindanawon artist and composer, Ms. Marie Anathea “Maan” Chua, the fascinating voice behind the hit songs “Itadyak” and “Sayaw,” known for her unconcealed singing and composing skills, graced the occasion to share her expertise, experiences, and insights in Writing Effective Lyrics: Tips and Techniques in Song Writing. She advocates to showing the magnificence of Mindanao through its culture, nature, unity, peace, and development. As a passionate and dedicated artist, Ms. Maan performed in Australia for the Philippine Independence Day celebration in 2018 and acted in the movie titled “Mindanao” in 2019. She also received several accolades in her artistic career, as she unanimously won the 1st Habi Kadayawan design competition for her exceptional neckpiece titled “Agung,” as well as her multiple victories in Kadayawan’s Tunog Mindanao songwriting competition. With the aid of advanced technologies, young people of this generation are enjoying Ms. Maan’s three music albums on social media platforms such as Spotify and YouTube.
USeP’s homegrown alumnus Mr. Maric A. Gavino and USeP’s former student Mr. Joshua Jimeno, who are slowly making their way in the Philippine music industry, take the challenge of teaching the Basics of Instrumentation: Choosing the Right Instruments to their fellow USePians. Both are emerging singer-songwriters and instrumentalists from Davao City. Moreover, Mr. Gavino’s lyrics were popularized through the Bisaya songs titled “Amplaya” and “Kapoy.”. Recently, his written song “Taliwala” became one of the Top 12 Grand Finalists of Philpop X Himig Handog 2024.
All three speakers invigorated participants’ musical and compositional potential by giving concrete feedback after every exercise.
In the afternoon, Team Theatre and Team Musical, led by Ms. Reah Izza Paglinawan, Program Head of Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Cultural Studies; and by Assoc. Mr. Norman โNoiโ Narciso provided feedback or insights on performances. He offered his experiential insights on the performances of “Balyan” and “Durian Legend,” suggesting that he uses a hands-on or practical approach to evaluating the performances. Also, his involvement in providing performance feedback aligns with the workshop’s goal of enhancing participants’ artistic skills and understanding of performing arts.
Finally, Asst. Prof. Joy R. USeP-CAS and ILCA are set to inaugurate the 1st TINGUG International Conference with the theme โVoices of Ancestry: Safeguarding Indigenous Cultural Heritage and Oral Traditions.โ Literary works will be showcased during the conference, providing a platform to highlight the University’s commitment to preserving and promoting IKSPs while addressing contemporary challenges and exploring opportunities for sustainable development in this area.
