Professor Abraham Sakili is a distinguished scholar and artist who has devoted his life to studying Muslim art and culture in the Philippines. With an impressive academic background, which includes a Ph.D. and MA in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, he has made significant contributions to the fields of art, culture, and humanities. One of his notable achievements is his involvement in the design of the UP Sablay, the official academic costume of the University of the Philippines.
Known for his pioneering work in Muslim art, Dr. Sakili has been a vocal advocate for recognizing and appreciating this often-overlooked aspect of Filipino culture. His groundbreaking research and publications have challenged conventional narratives and provided fresh perspectives on the Muslim community’s complex interplay of identity, expression, and socio-political realities.
His dedication to his art is apparent through his many solo art exhibitions and his impactful book “SPACE and IDENTITY: Expression in the Culture, Arts, and Society of the Muslim in the Philippines,” published in 2003. This work has positioned him as a prominent figure in the study of Muslim art and culture, influencing the conversation on these subjects for years. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Rajah Baginda Award for Outstanding Tausug in the same year.
In 2012, he was appointed as a jury member for the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). Having served as a former board member of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NCMF), he continues to wield significant influence in the fields of arts and culture. His dedication to advocating for the understanding and appreciation of Muslim art and culture serves as an inspiration for aspiring scholars and artists.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Sakili has actively engaged with the broader public through his art exhibitions and public lectures. His recent exhibition, “Salaโam… Magsukul… at Mabuhay!,” in 2023, offered a glimpse into his personal journey as an artist and scholar, showcasing the evolution of his work over the past four decades.
Dr. Sakili has dedicated the past 40 years to creating art and engaging in scholarship to address the persistent socio-political challenges Muslim communities face in the Philippines. Despite being a retired professor, he devotes his time, effort, and resources to advancing a critical perspective on Muslim art, culture, society, politics, and economics. Each publication, painting, and show reveals a new and thought-provoking viewpoint.
