The art of intricate mat weaving crafted by the ethnolinguistic group of Sama in Tawi-Tawi has been interpreted in the study “Ethno-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (EthnoSTEM) Ideas in the Sama Mat-Weaving” by Aljemedin Jaudinez from Mindanao State University-Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography and Ma. Nympha B. Joaquin from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. This study is the tenth article in the SPJRD September 2024 issue.
This research delves into the unique tools, techniques, and scientific principles underpinning Sama’s traditional weaving of mat, or 𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘰, revealing the community’s rich cultural heritage and ingenuity. Furthermore, the authors’ immersion in the community helped them uncover the ethnoSTEM concepts embedded in the weaving process.
