This October, we join the nation in celebrating National Indigenous Peoplesโ Month and in commemorating the 28th year of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997. Guided by this yearโs theme, โWeaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development,โ the celebration honors the living heritage of our Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) and their vital role in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future.
At the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), we take pride in being a community with its members hailing from diverse indigenous communities across the country. Their wisdom, resilience, and cultural heritage enrich our academic and social environment, inspiring us to recognize that progress is strongest when it is rooted in identity, inclusivity, and respect for tradition.
The IPRA, now in its 28th year, reminds us that the rights of ICCs/IPs to their ancestral lands, to self-determination, to cultural integrity, and to social justice are not merely legal guarantees, but moral responsibilities we are all called to uphold. As one USeP, we stand with our indigenous brothers and sisters in protecting their heritage, nurturing their knowledge systems, and amplifying their voices in nation-building.
This month, let us reflect on the value of weaving cultures and embracing diversity as the foundation of unity. By honoring the past, empowering the present, and investing in the future of indigenous communities, we strengthen the very fabric of our nation.
From the USeP community to all Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate with you. Happy National Indigenous Peoplesโ Month and 28th IPRA Commemoration!
