Fire safety orientation, drill enhance safety culture, campus readiness at USeP

Faculty members, staff, and students gathered on March 26, 2026, at the University Social Hall, USeP Obrero Campus, for a Fire Safety and Prevention Orientation, followed by a fire drill conducted on the University Grounds, as part of the observance of Fire Prevention Month.

Vice President for Administration Dr. Maria Luisa B. Faunillan, in her opening remarks, emphasized that the activity goes beyond a routine refresher, describing it as an investment in collective safety. She highlighted the importance of preparedness, noting that while fear may arise during emergencies, panic can be managed through proper training and awareness. She encouraged participants to apply what they learned, share the knowledge with peers, and integrate safety practices into their daily routines.

Providing the rationale of the activity, Administrative Services Division Head Dr. Reynilo D. Garcia highlighted the University’s continued commitment to ensuring a safe and disaster-ready campus environment.

The orientation featured resource speakers from the Bureau of Fire Protection Region XI, namely Community Relations Unit Chief SFO1 Kathlene Eve A. Valenciano and FO1 Adrian Urdaneta, who discussed fire prevention strategies, emergency response procedures, and the proper use of firefighting equipment.

The activity was further supported by the Barangay 19-B Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committee, which assisted in facilitating the conduct of the activity and ensuring the smooth implementation of the fire drill.

The activity culminated in a fire drill at the University grounds, allowing participants to practice evacuation protocols and apply the principles discussed during the orientation. The initiative forms part of the nationwide campaign every March to raise awareness on fire safety and prevention.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the activity supports Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting safety and emergency preparedness, Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through disaster risk reduction efforts, and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration with the BFP Region XI and Baranggay 19-B in delivering technical expertise and training.
