Red Cross Davao City Chapter catered participants from the academe in the 5th Red Cross 143 Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Training Camp held on November 29-December 03, 2018 at the BSP Camp in Malagos, Baguio District, Davao City.
The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) joined as the only ‘guest participant’ in the training, which was conducted in accordance with the provisions stipulated in Section 13 of RA 10121 or the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management System.
The 10 representatives from USeP were composed of freshmen, faculty members, and non-teaching staff in order to add to the existing Emergency Response Team (ERT). They were taught to execute the following DRR activities: Basic Life Support (BLS), First Aid, Swiftwater Safety and Rescue, Water Sanitation (particularly the Mass Water Production & Water Treatment), Basic Rope Rescue Techniques, Camp Management, Personal Survival, Technology in Disaster, Incident Command System International Humanitarian Law, and Safer Access.
Other participants include representatives from barangays in Poblacion, Talomo, Agdao, Buhangin, Bunawan, Calinan, Baguio, and Tugbok Districts. Volunteers from USeP who are trained in DRR management also participated in the Training Camp.
Red Cross organized the DRR training to strengthen its linkages with barangays, schools, and other stakeholders throughout Davao Region. Through the promotion of a culture of safety and resiliency, Red Cross supports the network of its community-based volunteers.
Part of the activities in the Camp include Quiz Bee and Management of the Dead and the Missing (MDM) events, where USeP’s clusters ranked 3rd and 1st, respectively.
