In line with its goal of strengthening the competitive edge of the metals and engineering industries in the Davao Region, the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) in partnership with the Department of Department of Science of Technology (DOST) through the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) and DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC) proudly launched its Metals and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC) on November 11, 2024, at USeP Obrero Campus, Davao City.
Key figures from the USeP Top Management and personnel, DOST, representatives from Region XI State University and Colleges (SUCs), local industry, stakeholders, and interested partners attended the said launching of the first MEIC in the region.
DOST-MIRDC Executive Director Engr. Robert O. Dizon shared an overview of MEICs initiated through the nationwide MEIC project of DOST-MIRDC. Engr. Dizon further explained that the project’s objective is to extend the Center’s services across the country by establishing “mini MIRDCs” that would facilitate research and development, training, technology transfer, and quality assurance activities using cutting-edge resources and facilities through partnerships with DOST regional offices and SUCs.
In his keynote address, DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. also discussed the direction of the project, which is ultimately targeted towards benefiting the local Filipino communities. Dr. Solidum stressed the importance of creating a vibrant ecosystem where national agencies like DOST can partner with local government units and even private agencies to support research and development to contribute to the growth and competitiveness of the regional /local industries.
Moreover, USeP President Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr. also revealed the University’s plans and visions for the MEIC. In his welcome address, he said that the launching MEIC aligns with the University’s vision of transforming lives and communities by equipping a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce that is ready to take part in the advancement of metals and engineering industries in the country. President Gabales also highlighted that in 2019, the University also inaugurated the Fabrication Laboratory and DigiHub in the University, and shared how the University community is grateful for the continued support and trust from the DOST. “ We firmly believe that the Davao Region holds immense potential, and with the launch of this facility, we are taking a significant step toward realizing it. This launch reaffirms our commitment to making science, technology, and innovation accessible to the communities we serve. As we look ahead, we are excited to witness the impact of the Metals and Engineering Innovation Center on our University, our industry partners, and the Davao Region,” President Gabales said.
The launch concluded with a marker unveiling, ribbon-cutting, and facility walkthrough, symbolizing the beginning of a new era of innovation for the region.
USeP, known for its thrust on technology adoption and innovation, was chosen by DOST XI as its partner SUC to host one of the new MEICs for the project’s second batch. As the sole MEIC in the region, USeP’s MEIC will serve as a central hub for innovation, research, and development in the metals and engineering sector, marking a key milestone in the region’s technological progress.
