Davao City, Philippines – December 3, 2024 – The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) through the USeP Transformative Foresight Group hosted the Sustainable Futures Symposium, bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable development in Mindanao and the broader Philippines.
The program commenced with an opening message from USeP President Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales Jr. who lauded the success of the University’s Futures Thinking program. In his remarks, President Gabales emphasized the significance of sustainability, quoting, “Sustainability is our ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability and resources of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Dr. Adrian M. Tamayo of Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) highlighted the role of partnerships in achieving sustainability, while Ms. Marina Arenata from the Philippine Statistics Agency (PSA) discussed the relevance of locally tailored Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators. Dr. Francis Evan Manayan of Unifrutti Tropical Philippines urged a shift towards a more proactive attitude in sustainability practices, and Mr. Lemuel Lloyd Manalo of Interface Development Interventions Inc. focused on sustainable urban transformation.
The event concluded with the official launch of two significant projects under USeP’s Future-driven Innovation initiative. These included the University Dashboard and the Sustainability Website—two online platforms developed over the past year through collaborative efforts of the Futures Thinking team, led by Program Manager Dr. Daisy Besing, with guidance from USeP’s top management. These tools aim to support data-driven decision-making and promote sustainability initiatives across the university and beyond.
