Davao Region is known for its rich agricultural landscape, and the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) remains committed to nurturing the next generation of agriculturists. With this, USeP has initiated discussions with the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office XI (DA-RFO XI) to expand scholarship opportunities and strengthen research collaboration, ensuring that agriculture students receive the support needed to advance their studies.
On March 24, 2025, USeP President Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr. paid a courtesy visit to DA-RFO XI Regional Executive Director Mr. Macario D. Gonzaga at the newly inaugurated office building in the Regional Government Complex, Bago Oshiro, Tugbok, Davao City. Accompanying Pres. Gabales were Vice President for Research, Development and Extension Dr. Roger C. Montepio, Malabog Extension Campus Coordinator Mr. Rolen A. Bocog, and representatives from USeP Mintal Campus.
The meeting focused on potential scholarship programs that could provide financial assistance to students, particularly those from the Paquibato District. Pres. Gabales emphasized the importance of making agricultural education accessible, especially for students who face financial challenges. He underscored the need to identify and support those eager to pursue careers in agriculture but require assistance to sustain their studies.
On top of the scholarship, Pres. Gabales also highlighted the value of internship programs in equipping students with practical knowledge and skills. He expressed USeP’s interest in collaborating with DA-RFO XI to provide hands-on training opportunities in agricultural offices and institutions to ensure that students gain real-world experience to complement their academic learning.
Furthermore, the discussion also covered potential research and extension collaboration and the strengthening of USeP’s agriculture programs to better equip future agriculturists with the necessary knowledge and skills.
In response, DA-XI RED Gonzaga welcomed the initiative and expressed optimism about a possible partnership, recognizing the need to invest in agricultural education to sustain the region’s agricultural industry.
For his part, Pres. Gabales is hopeful to provide greater opportunities for students and contribute to the growth and sustainability of the agricultural sector in Davao Region.
As one of the leading agricultural schools in the region, USeP continues to offer quality agriculture programs across its Malabog Extension Campus, Mintal Campus, and Tagum-Mabini Campus (Mabini Unit), reaffirming its commitment to developing skilled and dedicated professionals in the field of agriculture.
