The Evolving Landscape: Innovations in Education – International Plenary Talk Series
The two-day International Plenary Talk Series, themed “The Evolving Landscape: Innovations in Education,” was successfully concluded on July 26, 2024, via Zoom. Organized by the USeP Graduate School of Teacher Education and Technology (GSTET) and led by Dr. Virnalisi C. Mindaña, Graduate School Head, the event was a collaborative effort that included Doctor of Education in Educational Management (EdD) students.
The series emphasized topics such as micro-credentials, artificial intelligence in education, and the Department of Education (DepEd) MATATAG Curriculum. The event was graced by University top management led by Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr., University President; Dr. Jeneifer C. Nueva, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Shirley S. Villanueva, Chancellor of Tagum-Mabini Campus; Dr. Eveyth P. Deligero, Dean of Office of the Advanced Studies; Dr. Eleonor T. Guden, CTET Dean, and other esteemed personnel.
Professor Technologist Dr. Johan @ Eddy Luaran, Director of the Advanced Learning Department at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia, delivered the first talk on micro-credentials. Dr. Luaran provided a comprehensive presentation on how micro-credentials are used internationally, showcasing their integration at Universiti Teknologi MARA and their impact on upskilling individuals, even at later stages in their careers.
Ms. Alona F. Hinay, a Doctor of Education in Educational Management student at USeP, followed with a presentation on micro-credentials from a Philippine perspective. She offered valuable insights into the significance and implementation of micro-credentials locally, highlighting the roles of TESDA, DepEd, SEAMEO, and other organizations. Understanding how micro-credentials can drive educational and career advancement in the Philippines is essential.
Dr. Joie D. Cataytay, Deputy Director of USeP CDIO, discussed the Conceiving, Designing, Implementing, and Operating (CDIO) Framework. Dr. Cataytay emphasized the need to maximize this innovative framework to produce real-world systems and products, fostering a more competitive next generation of professionals. She reiterated the importance of integrating CDIO in developing innovative teaching strategies, learning activities, and assessments.
Dr. Randy A. Tudy, Deputy Director of USeP Publication Unit, together with Dr. Elmer-Rico E. Mojica, Professor at Pace University, New York City, USA, delivered a talk on artificial intelligence in education. Dr. Tudy emphasized the importance of integrating AI into educational practices responsibly and ethically. The rapid changes in our educational landscape require us to embrace these evolving technologies.
Dr. Mojica provided valuable information on the role of AI in daily activities. He highlighted how AI has become integral to our deliverables, offering greater convenience. The integration of AI in higher education is crucial, as students are abreast of the latest trends. Educators must stay informed about these innovations and continue initiatives to acquire best practices in using AI in education.
Lastly, Dr. Janette G. Veloso, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent (ASDS) of DepEd – Davao del Norte Division, presented a comprehensive session on the DepEd MATATAG Curriculum. Dr. Veloso emphasized the need for educational reform to improve the overall performance of all stakeholders. She also presented the legal bases of the MATATAG Curriculum, concluding with a message from Vice President Sara Duterte and former DepEd Secretary: “Together, let us rally for an improved learning system. Together, let us rally for every Filipino child. Para sa isang MATATAG na bayan. Para sa ating mahal na Pilipinas.”
Dr. Lemuel M. Sayao and Dr. Marites L. Domingo, both Doctor of Education in Educational Management students at USeP, delivered a comprehensive synthesis of the two-day plenary talk series following the engaging open forum facilitated by Ms. Ivy N. Macagba, an EdD student. Dr. Eleonor Guden, College Dean, and Dr. Virnalisi Mindaña, Associate Dean and Graduate School Head, delivered the closing remarks after awarding certificates to the resource speakers. Dr. Guden and Dr. Mindaña expressed their gratitude to the top management for their support and thanked the speakers for sharing their time and expertise. Dr. Mindaña extended her gratitude by acknowledging all contributors to the success of the event. The whole activity was also made successful through the resounding efforts of the master of ceremonies, Mr. Jemuel G. Rubio.
