USeP Law in partnership with IDIS conducts capacity-building session in Brgy. Salaysay, Marilog District, Davao City.


On June 29, 2024 | Three Law Student Practitioners (3) from USeP-School of Law, supervised by Atty. Jesus Agora Villardo III, with support from GOJUST UNOPS in collaboration with the Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS) Inc., conducted a capacity-building session in Brgy. Salaysay, Marilog District, Davao City. This session focused on the Katarungang Pambarangay Law vis-a-vis the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA).
Eighty-six participants (86), comprising of men and women from the Barangay Officials, Katarungnag Pambarangay, and trained Bantay-Bukid (Forest Guards) of Brgy. Salaysay, actively engaged in the comprehensive one-day activity. The morning session included an orientation and lectures on the fundamental legal processes of Katarungang Pambarangay. In the afternoon session, Atty. Villardo delivered an insightful lecture on IPRA, followed by a dynamic, open forum where participants asked questions on the inter-facing of relevant provisions of the Local Government Code (R.A. 7160) with IPRA (R.A. 8371).
The USeP-School of Law is dedicated to empowering and strengthening communities, especially Indigenous Peoples and underserved populations, by providing essential legal services, including capacity-building on relevant laws, rules, and regulations. This capacity-building session aims to equip barangay functionaries and members of the communities with the knowledge and skills with the end in view of widening access to justice by local communities. In return, communities are able to resolve conflicts locally thereby reducing the need for protracted litigation.
