Pioneering BAELAL students reach milestone with thesis presentation at research forum

by Ashlee Jane Inso

The pioneering 4th-year students of the Bachelor of Arts in English Language major in Applied Linguistics (BAELAL) reached another milestone as they successfully presented their thesis study at the BAELAL Research Forum on March 21, 2025, at the Audio-Visual Room (AVR) of the College of Information and Computing (CIC).

Covering a diverse range of topics, including discourse analysis of prominent political figures, linguistic landscapes, and the representation of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in media and political discourse, the scholarly works of the 4th-year BAELAL students highlighted the significance of language studies in understanding societal and cultural narratives, emphasizing its role in transforming communities.

Dr. Marnie Grace I. Sonico, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), expressed her appreciation for organizing an event that served as a vital platform for sharing research and deepening the understanding of language-related problems. Dr. Ernel D. Bagbag, Manager of the Research and Development Center for Arts and Sciences (RDCAS), delivered an inspirational message highlighting that research should be applied beyond the academic walls of the University as it has the power to drive societal change. Asst. Prof. Joy R. Risonar, the batch’s ELAL 400 instructor, congratulated the 4th-year BAELAL students on achieving another significant milestone in their academic journey. She also urged them to use the feedback provided by the reactors to improve and refine their studies.

The research presentations were divided into two batches. Mr. Darryl Imperial, served as the reactor for the first batch, while Ms. Maria Danica Ching, evaluated the second batch. Both reactors provided substantial recommendations on how the students can make their research structured and clear in terms of its societal implications.

Exhibiting their excellence and dedication in exploring existing issues in the discipline of language, the pioneering 4th-year BAELAL students showed not only their knowledge of applied linguistics but also the relevance of their studies in the real-world setting. With the support and insights from the experts and faculty, these students are ready to make valuable contributions to the field of applied linguistics and beyond.
