USeP-CAS Mathematics and Statistics Department conducts Regression Analysis Workshop at DCNHS

The Mathematics and Statistics Department of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) conducted a two-day extension activity titled Statistical Training for Professionals: Seminar-Workshop on Regression Analysis Using R on July 4 and 11, 2025, at Davao City National High School.

Spearheaded by CAS Extension Head Dr. Stephanie O. Espinola, the seminar-workshop featured Dr. Anthony F. Capili as the keynote lecturer. With clarity and depth, Dr. Capili discussed key concepts such as Simple Linear Regression, Diagnostics, and Multiple Linear Regression using R software. The sessions were both comprehensive and interactive, culminating in a hands-on workshop where participants applied their learning through real data analysis.

Dr. Capili opened the training with the striking quote by George E. P. Box, “All models are wrong, but some are useful,” emphasizing the need for discernment in statistical modeling. He concluded his lectures with a thought-provoking quote from Scottish writer Andrew Lang: “He uses statistics like a drunk uses a lamp-post—more for support than illumination,”—a powerful reminder that statistics should be used to enlighten, not to mislead.

Supporting the implementation of the activity were five selected BS Statistics student-interns, supervised by the department’s faculty. Their active involvement not only ensured the seamless facilitation of the training but also reflected the department’s commitment to cultivating future statisticians through real-world engagement and service-learning.

As statistics continue to shape public discourse, policy-making, and academic research, the USeP-CAS Mathematics and Statistics Department remains steadfast in its vision to empower professionals with the tools not only to analyze—but to analyze responsibly.
