Dr. Rodney C. Jubilado, Chair of the Humanities Division at the University of Hawaii, United States of America (USA), shares his insights and words of encouragement as the resource speaker in delving into the importance of exploring Philippine culture during the training-workshop on Methods in Cultural Studies at the University of Southeastern Philippines Social Hall, USeP Obrero Campus, on May 6, 2024.
The event was initiated by the Language and Literature Department (LLD), in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and HANDURAWAN to embrace cultural diversity and highlight the urgency of studying Philippine culture in celebrating inclusivity.
Program Heads from CAS namely Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Cultural Studies (BALCS) and the Bachelor of Arts in English Language major in Applied Linguistics (BAELAL), Faculty and Staff from CAS, and external universities participated in the said workshop.
The activity commenced with the opening remarks of Dr. Marnie Grace Sonico, CAS Dean, and an inspirational talk from Dr. Genna J. Carmelo, CESE, CIO Director. Dr. Angelo Lenard E. Yu, Program Head of Master of Arts in Literature, read the rationale and guidelines of the event.
“As a literature and cultural studies student, the talk is really important because it gives us an idea that we should not look at things through the surface and Dr. Jubilado taught us how to deeply understand the images and he has complex insights,” said John Bryan Cayomo, a third year BALCS student.
Angela Teodoro, Lyzha Escarda, and Kristina Caballero, third year students from the BALCS, also presented their cultural research proposals for critiquing and feedback from Dr. Jubilado and LLD faculty.
