Article by Maria Danica Ching and Frank Lloyd de la Cruz

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) successfully conducted its online Graduate School Orientation last January 25, 2025, from 1:00-3:00 PM, with the theme: “Being oriented: A Step towards our Dream to Become Master’s Degree Holders”. The orientation was hosted by one of the GSAS students, Ms. Aubrey Jane Vitor.

In attendance were the Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jeneifer C. Nueva, Dean of the Office of Advanced Studies Dr. Eveyth P. Deligero, CAS Dean Dr. Marnie Grace I. Sonico, and Program Heads Dr. Angelo Lenard E. Yu of Master of Arts in Literature, Asst. Prof. Joy R. Risonar of Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, Dr. Ariel C. Pedrano of Master of Science in Applied Mathematics, and Dr. Majella G. Bautista of Master of Science in Biology. The members of the faculty of the graduate programs under the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) also joined the event.

Dr. Marnie Grace I. Sonico, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), in her Welcome Address emphasized that “GSAS students must contribute to shaping their respective fields of study.” VPAA Dr. Jeneifer C. Nueva, in an inspiring message, shared her personal experiences and lessons in pursuing her graduate studies. She told the students, “You started it, you can finish it.”

Breakout sessions of the various graduate programs were then held where the faculty members were introduced and the retention policies and important dates were discussed. The sessions also provided an avenue to raise questions and clarify queries and concerns both from the faculty and students.

Asst. Prof. Joy R. Risonar introduced the support personnel of the College of Arts and Sciences who are equally significant in aiding and guiding graduate students in their studies.

The GSAS orientation is conducted at the start of the semester to help students transition into their programs by acclimatizing them with academic expectations, resources, and program structures, and to foster connections with faculty and fellow graduate students, thereby creating a supportive community. Additionally, it is aimed at equipping students with practical information and skills for navigating their studies and achieving academic and professional success.
