GSAS Holds Thesis Forum


The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) recently featured the studies of its graduate students during its 1st Semester Thesis Public Forum on October 5, 2024. The event, themed “USePYanong Panukiduki sa taga-CAS: Researches that transform communities in the ASEAN and beyond,” highlighted the potential of scholarly work to address societal and academic issues.

Ten graduate students from various programs presented their research findings. Three (3) represented the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics program namely: Teresito R. delos Reyes, Jr. (The Unheard Narratives of IP ALS Learners: Basis for Intervention Program in Learning English), Linagyn A. Gementiza (Structures, Discursive Spins, and Ideologies of News Reports on Philippine Vaccination Initiatives), and Darryl Imperial (Development of Meme-based Material Enhancing Students’ Critical Thinking Skills). Three (3) graduate students from the Master of Science in Biology program were also present, namely: Maria Kristine D. Limosnero (Characterization of Microplastics Ingested by Commercially Consumed Gastropods in Davao Gulf), Jessa Mae B. Patalita (Genus Stenus Latreille, (Genus Stenus Latreille, 1797 [Insecta: Coleoperta: Staphylinidae] of Selected Mountain Ranges in Davao Region, Philippines), and Bryll L. Espeja (Assessment of Begonia spp. (Begoniaceae) in Selected Mountains of Southern Mindanao, Philippines). Lastly, the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics was also represented by four (4) students: Lawton John A. Yabes (A Comparative Analysis of Algorithmic Approaches of Enhancing Traffic Management in Davao City through Graph Theory and Operations Research), Francis A. Manico (On the Logical, 3-Logical, and 3-Total Logical of Some Graphs), Abdel E. Sadji (Minimizing College Course Scheduling Conflicts Through 0-1 Integer Programming Model: The Case of Davao de Oro State College – Teacher Education Department), and Mike C. Homecillo (Box-Tiao SARIMAX Models on Rice Production in the Philippines).

Key University officials graced the public forum, including Dr. Jeneifer C. Nueva, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Eveyth P. Deligero, Dean of the Office of Advanced Studies; Dr. Marnie Grace I. Sonico, CAS Dean; and Asst. Prof. Joy R. Risonar, GSAS Head and CAS Associate Dean.

In her inspirational message, Dr. Nueva emphasized the importance of conducting research. She shared, “Engaging in academic discourse through your research is more than fulfilling a scholarly requirement. It cultivates critical thinking, hones your analytical skills, and fosters a mindset geared towards innovation and problem-solving.”

Parallel sessions were also held to allow the audience to ask questions and comment on the studies of the presenters. Expert reactors were also in attendance to provide the presenters with valuable feedback and suggestions that can help improve their studies.

The thesis public forum is a testament to GSAS’ commitment to nurturing research excellence and contributing to the University’s vision of becoming a premier research university that transforms communities in the ASEAN and beyond.
