ICAS Day 2 Highlights


The 4th International Conference on Arts and Sciences 2024, organized by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) under the leadership of Dean Dr. Marnie Grace I. Sonico, and the Research and Development Center for Arts and Sciences (RDCAS) headed by Center Manager Dr. Ariel C. Pedrano, continues to unite the fields of Arts and Sciences for a sustainable future. The conference commenced on November 23, 2024, via Zoom.

Asst. Prof. Victor Paul J. dela Cruz kicked off with a recap of Day 1, complemented by an engaging audio-visual presentation.

Dr. Merlina H. Juruena, Director of the Research & Development Division, emphasized the importance of exploring the profound connections between Arts and Sciences and their societal impacts. She encouraged the audience to engage with innovative ideas that push the boundaries of knowledge.

Day 2 featured plenary speakers from the Literature and Language and Social Science clusters. For the Literature and Language cluster, Associate Professor James McLellan from Universiti Brunei Darussalam tackled about the Translanguaging, Englishes and local languages in and beyond school classrooms in Southeast Asia. Dr. Alan Reed from the University of Newcastle, Australia discussed the issues on artificial language design as a science and an Art. Prof. Siti Aisyah binti Panatik Abdul Rahman from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia discussed the role of digital humanities and social sciences for the social science counterpart.

In the afternoon, breakout sessions were held for the Literature and Language, and Social Science clusters. The Literature and Language parallel session, led by Dr. Angelo Lenard E. Yu, Program Head of MA Literature, featured six presenters who answered participants’ queries. The Natural Science session, led by Social Science cluster led by Ms. Reca Mae S. Cabatbat, General Education Department faculty, featured six presenters who engaged in Q&A with the virtual audience.

In her closing remarks, Dean Sonico expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the organizing committee and all participants. She encouraged everyone to carry forward the insights and inspiration gained into their academic and professional journeys.

This conference exemplified the power of collaboration, intellectual exchange, and a shared commitment to advancing knowledge.
